Connect with locals and gain insider knowledge as you journey through Hokianga to Doubtless Bay and the breathtaking Bay of Islands, enjoying incredibly unique experiences along the way.
Day 1
Auckland – Hokianga
On this epic seven-day discovery we leave behind the hustle and bustle of the city and journey to the winterless north, steeped in history and natural beauty. The picturesque Matakana Region awaits, where we head to Morris and James for a behind the scenes look at what it takes to produce large scale pottery from locally sourced clay. On a private tour, learn about the innovation, engineering, art and design all part of the iconic Morris and James story. Continuing our journey North, take a step back in time with a visit to the award-winning Kauri Museum in the west coast village of Matakohe, famous for its legacy left behind by ancient kauri trees which once covered northern New Zealand. Next it’s on to the wide-open spaces of the Hokianga region, as you travel through the breathtakingly beautiful Waipoua Forest. This evening join your Travel Director and fellow travellers for an unforgettable dining experience at Bryers Room Restaurant, the 100-year-old dining room a picturesque setting overlooking Hokianga Harbour.
Day 2
Hokianga
Start your day by waking up to the magnificent views of the Tasman Sea, harbour and sand dunes that surround you. After a relaxing breakfast, travel to the natural wonderland of the Waipoua Forest, an ancient green world of towering trees and rare birds. A local specialist guides you on a journey to meet the legendary Tane Mahuta, ‘The Lord of the Forest,’ the country's largest kauri tree. Learn about the deep spiritual respect held for the giants and their importance to both the natural environment and the people. The afternoon is yours to spend at your leisure. Perhaps take time to explore the beautiful coastal walks around the Hokianga Harbour, or take the opportunity to sit back and relax on your private balcony enjoying the stunning views and spectacular sunset.
Day 3
Hokianga – Cape Reinga – Doubtless Bay
Today we bid farewell to the west coast and head north, to the sacred site of Cape Reinga. It is here that the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean in a spectacular swirl of currents, and 165 metres above sea level offers a unique perspective of this rare site. At the northern most tip of the cape is a gnarled pohutukawa tree, believed to be over 800 years old. Tonight, join your fellow travellers for dinner with spectacular beach views.
Day 4
Doubtless Bay
A coffee lover’s dream day out comes to life today in the rolling hills above Doubtless Bay. It’s here we visit New Zealand’s sole commercial coffee growers Rob and Carol Schluter, owners of Ikarus Coffee Roasters and Pekerau Hills Coffee Farm. Hear about how they are pioneering coffee growing in New Zealand and offering the full experience from seed to cup. Later we journey to New Zealand’s north northernmost vineyard and winery Karikari Estate for a wine tasting and lunch. Nestled on the stunning Karikari Peninsula overlooking the rolling coastal land, the unique climate and soils combine to produce full bodied and distinctive wines from a stunning landscape.
Day 5
Doubtless Bay – Bay of Islands
After a relaxing morning, take a stroll along the beach before we continue our journey of the North to the subtropical micro-region of the stunning Bay of Islands. Stop for lunch at the historic fishing village of Mangonui, the main centre of Doubtless Bay. Once a busy whaling and trading town, the Mangonui waterfront has a collection of charming 150-year-old buildings that now house cafés, art and craft shops and the world famous Mangonui Fish Shop. With the afternoon at leisure, perhaps relax at the resort or explore the Waitangi Treaty Grounds located next door.
Day 6
Bay of Islands ‘Day at Leisure’
Spend today exploring and soaking up the beauty of the Bay of Islands. Perhaps head out on to the water and experience a day of sailing aboard a historic tall ship, enjoy a Bay of Islands Wine Tour, or join a Russell Mini Tour and learn a little more about the history and settling of the Bay of Islands. We offer a wide range of activities for you to choose from. Your Travel Director will assist you in booking all your chosen optional experiences. Tonight, you are free to dine as you wish. With incredible dining options to choose from, you are spoilt for choice.
Day 7
Bay of Islands – Auckland
Join the locals this morning as you roam the stalls of the Old Packhouse Market in Kerikeri, Northlands largest and most colourful market. Sample the best of what Northland has to offer and enjoy some great Northland hospitality, tasting your way through locally grown produce, and discovering a wide range of arts and crafts made by highly skilled local artisans. Then it is time to bid farewell to the incredible winterless North and make our way back to Auckland where our journey comes to an end.
